Moodle LMS 4.5 – Transforming the learning experience with AI

Moodle LMS 4.5

The much-anticipated Moodle LMS 4.5 has launched and comes packed with over 250 exciting new improvements and features.

Moodle is one of the most popular open-source learning management systems (LMSs) on the planet, with over 300 million users worldwide.

This latest version of Moodle transforms the learning experience, by harnessing the power of AI, improving the course layout, and fine-tuning many of the platform’s essential learning tools.

Artificial Intelligence – Delivered your way!

At the heart of Moodle LMS 4.5 sits a new and highly flexible AI subsystem. This allows L&D professionals to choose if, how, and where to use AI across the learning journey.

It’s AI that plays by your rules.

Moodle LMS 4.5 offers a ‘human-centered’ approach to AI, where organisations using the platform maintain complete autonomy over how they implement AI-powered learning or features.

Supported AI models

Moodle LMS 4.5 will initially support the OpenAI API. This allows Moodle to leverage open-source models, such as LiteLLM, and LocalAI. Further support services like Groq and Azure, are also included.

Moodle have confirmed that additional AI models will be included in future releases.

Moodle’s new AI subsystem ensures that organisations are never tied to a single AI provider. This helps to ensure long-term flexibility and scalability for your LMS.

AI-powered content generation

Moodle LMS 4.5 is the first version of Moodle to feature AI-powered features.

L&D professionals can save enormous amounts of time and resource by speeding up the content creation process.

All Moodle LMS users, with the appropriate permissions, can now create AI-generated text and images on course pages.

To ensure transparency, all AI-generated content is automatically tagged and highlighted to learners. AI-generated imagery also includes tags, which helps to support inclusive learning and accessibility.

Administrators can also allow learners to use AI features in Moodle LMS to generate or summarise content, helping them to personalise their learning journey and break down material into digestible chunks. All actions are logged for review and continuous learning improvement.

Refined course organisation

Grouping course content together has sometimes been a challenge in Moodle in the past.

But not anymore!

Moodle 4.5 LMS introduces Subsections for the first-time. This new addition to the hierarchy allows course owners to seamlessly group materials or information together, improving on-page organisation and navigation.

Subsections open the door to creating clear and sequential learning pathways, without the need for a third-party plugin. Subsections help learners by segmenting content into bite size chunks. This drastically reduces the cognitive load and stops learners from feeling overwhelmed.

Reorganising or moving course content around the page and in-between sections is also incredibly simple and intuitive.

Enhanced assignment activity

Moodle LMS 4.5 features a fully revamped assignment page. This includes a new layout, sticky header and footer, and improved filters on submissions.

The new automatic additional attempts feature promotes continuous feedback without manual intervention.

Learners can track their submissions more easily, thanks to a freshly revamped table layout. The feedback loop on resubmissions has also been tightened up and improved with continuous feedback.

Improved media integration and screen recording

Moodle LMS 4.5 unlocks a quicker and easier way to incorporate rich media into your learning content.

The content editor seamlessly lets you include audio, video, and multimedia. The UI has also been overhauled, making it easier to embed or manage your multimedia files.

One of the best new features is screen recording. This allows educators to generate video walkthroughs or tutorials for inexperienced users of the platform. Learners can also leverage video recordings to share with their tutor.

By including multimedia assets throughout courses, learners can benefit from more engaging styles of content. Video and audio content can also support a more diverse range of learning styles and preferences.

Boost engagement with personalised notifications

One of the big challenges for many L&D professionals is increasing LMS engagement.

Moodle LMS 4.5 includes a personalised notification system, which notifies learners about impending assignment deadlines or upcoming tasks. This helps to prompt learners to login to the LMS and reengage with content. It can also prevent learners missing those all-important deadlines.

The automated notification system is also a huge time saver for LMS administrators. Notifications are configured once and repeated over a set period. Previously, Moodle administrators needed to login and manually configure all their notifications.

Open Badges 3.0 with badge system improvements

Moodle LMS 4.5 includes a streamlined badge system.

Open Badges are used as part of a gamification approach to digital learning. Badges are created and issued to recognise the competencies, skills, achievements or attitudes of their recipients.

An Open Badge is a digital picture or icon, which contains metadata that informs who has issued the badge to whom and on what basis.

In Moodle LMS 4.5, importing, exporting, and copying badges is a much easier process. This helps with sharing badges seamlessly across different courses.

By including badges and gamification across your courses, this can be used as a tool to increase learner engagement and motivate them to complete tasks or assignments.
